After a couple more hours of brainstorming we’re clearly struggling with the size and scope of the US. On a map it looks easy to plan a little trip around Los Angeles, visiting various points of interests. But no, getting to each point are little journeys in and of themselves, LA is many times bigger than our capital so our sense of distance can get screwed up. Sightseeing in Copenhagen might involve sitting in a bus for twenty minutes to go somewhere far, but that won’t fly over there. The distance from LA to Las Vegas is mind boggling. Not to mention going from Mount Rushmore to Chicago!! I’ll just have to slowly grok these vast distances once we’ve driven for 18 hours and nothing in the horizon has moved!
That’s actually one of the reasons we like the current route taking us through some rather empty places. Yeah Iowa isn’t renowned for its fascinating cultural appeal, but it’ll be an experience all of its own traveling hundreds and hundreds of kilometers with nothing but corn as far as the eye can see.
