Wow!
Holy hell! I’m genuinely impressed with the upcoming Christmas calendar heading our way! Our Danish tax-based TV service station is ramping up for a helluva sarcastic take on the Danish culture, religion and racism. The show’s called Yallahrup Færgeby*, and features a pretty troubled cast…
The show’s name touches on racism right off the bat with the word Yallah, but it’s also an insanely clever cultural pun off an old old Christmas calendar called Julerup Færgeby. Julerup featured an idyllic picturesque happy-frolicking-about Danish little town using the exact same dolls-on-strings technique. The concept of taking that town and presenting it as a run-down immigrant ghetto could not be a more sarcastic comment on the current Danish multi-ethnical culture.
Oh and the cast? Well, for now I’ll just mention Abu Babu, the local Yallahrup terrorist! He comes complete with dynamite-vest, haha that’s funny. He even has a great catchy song called En Krammer til Osama! (A Hug For Osama). Click it click it! The lyrics are going to be mostly gibberish if you don’t understand Danish I guess, but I think you’ll catch the drift. Either that or I’m tempted to post a full translation..

The rest of the cast, as well as a trailer and another music video, are available through the show’s website.

I don’t feel much love for my country in everyday life, but this tickles a bit of nationalistic pride in me. I love that we can that the shit out of ourselves this way and I’m sure it’ll provoke some relevant discussions on the state of our 2nd generation middle-eastern immigrants, the failure to integrate them much in our culture, and so on.
And don’t tell me any mainstream tax-sponsored public service station would air something like this in the US??

The whole thing might be too local to really get across how wildly in-your-face and politically incorrect this show looks to be. But I’m anxiously awaiting its broadcast, and if it lives up to the trailers and music (the whole soundtrack is available here) I’ll never speak ill of the station again.

Easy on dude! I have seen the trailer, myspace & the webpage. Remember this is not a Christmas calendar show for children it is for adults. And I think it looks very sarcastic. I think you should see this more like a Christmas show seen through the eyes of a dane who votes for the Danish National Party(DF). It is sad that we have so many danes who does that. But again to see it from their point of view is funny. If you have seen some of the old (DF) posters etc… you should know.
